A NEWLY-FORMED Barry school parents, teachers and families association is striving to make its playground take off by launching a virtual eco-balloon race.

The Ysgol Sant Curig PTFA is raising money for new children’s play equipment and appealing for all to join in the race which starts on Hallowe’en, on Saturday, October 31.

The event has been organised by PTFA chairwoman, Michelle Mears and deputy chairwoman, Stacy Huston with association members.

Each balloon costs £3.

It is a virtual eco race and the prizes are £500 in cash, an iPad and lots of book vouchers.

The Welsh-medium primary school has a school weekly lottery and sell through a local company house coloured t-shirts and hoodies where it gets a certain amount for every sale.

PTFA chairwoman, Stacy Huston said: “We are desperate to raise as much as possible virtually due to covid-19 to go towards new play equipment and an outdoor learning environment for the school.

“We recently did a colouring competition with a Hallowe’en theme.

“So far the new PTFA has purchased a new portable sound system and mic speaker for events and contributed £1500 to the new projector system recently installed.

“Outside is our next target, but it’s a big one.

“We need over £10,000 for what we want

She added: “The dream play area would be to have a converted shipping container area on the unused grassy area opposite the nursery for arts and crafts outside, wellbeing, outdoor learning and the play area we are looking at something other than wood as we have wood at the moment.

“It is forever needing repair and areas are out of use a lot of the time due to health and safety so anything modern and safe and fun for the kids.”
