RESIDENTS have been reacting to news of a proposed development of 136 homes at Llandough Hill.

The site, located to the south of Llandough Hill and Penarth Road, was allocated for development in the Vale of Glamorgan Local Development Plan (LDP).

With Penarth Road being a key transport route to and from Cardiff for many Vale residents, there are concerns in particular over the impact of the plans on traffic and the surrounding environment.

In its report, which has not yet been submitted to the Vale council, developers Barton Willmore says “the site offers excellent potential for an exciting residential development that will be integral to the surrounding context”.

The homes are proposed to be a mixture of one, two, three, and four-bedrooms including houses, apartments and key worker accommodation.

Vale Conservative councillor for Llandough George Carroll, who is holding a meeting on the plans with residents via Facebook on December 3, said: “I have concerns in relation to the size of the development and the impact it is likely to have on access traffic and the loss of green space here.

“Unfortunately it is in the LDP but that does not mean this is a forgone conclusion. I’ll be holding the Facebook Live session to inform residents of how best to oppose the plans if they’d like to.”

The site is currently not in use, and the developers say there are “very few good quality trees within the site”.

Resident Andrew Woods said: “This is an application to build 136 houses on green land meaning more traffic in our village and the end of the woods. I am against the destruction of green space and the wildlife inhabitants of this area, and I would hope the council (Llandough) would oppose this development.”

Llandough Community Council says councillors are meeting to discuss the proposals shortly.

A Vale council spokesman said: “We have not received a planning application in relation to this matter to date and understand the developers are currently carrying out their statutory pre-application consultation.

“The site is allocated for development in the Local Development Plan, which allocates land south of Llandough Hill / Penarth Road for 130 dwellings. At this stage comments should be directed to the developer as part of their consultation. The council as local planning authority will carry out further public consultation as part of the formal consideration of the application.

“All applications are thoroughly considered, with all relevant factors taken into account. These include, but are not restricted to, the impact on traffic flows and school provision.”
