FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of No.2 Dock in Barry.
This is an impressive aerial view of the No. 2 Dock, Barry after the Great Western Railway Company took over Barry Railway in 1922.
After the takeover they endeavoured to modernise the efficiency and speed of loading coal into ships.
Hoists were strengthened and they were able to handle 20 ton wagons instead of the earlier 12 ton wagons.
South of the No 2 dock was extensive cold storage sheds where frozen meat was handled and stored.
No. 2 Dock is 3,338 feet long and 400 to 600 feet wide and connected to Dock No. 1 by a narrow channel, the dock walls are over 46 feet high and built of large limestone blocks.
This photograph shows the impressive size and scale of this massive undertaking.
The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the information.
