COMPLAINTS are still being received that faults in the work on dwellings at the Billybanks continue to cause dampness.

It was reported to the Council that in March of this year the contractor undertook to carry out the necessary remedial work on 46 dwellings In the Billybanks ‘A’ site.

Ten of the tenants complain that the fault has not been properly cured and there are in addition four new complaints.

The surveyor asked that they should meet the architect with a view to reaching some finality in the matter.

Several councillors expressed concern that the problem has not been settled.

On Tuesday the Billybanks featured in the BBC programme ‘Wales Today’ in an unenviable light as a place in which it was not able to leave even washing on the line.

Two residents of Prince Charles Court, Mrs Styling and Mr Morgan said they had each lost at least £5 worth of clothes.

A previous report to the Council had been made to the same effect and a letter added that the clothes lines were not in a good drying position.

The Council noted the complaints but decided on the advice of the Surveyor to defer action pending certain developments.

A resident said, however, “What with one thing and another, the patience of tenants is becoming exhausted as the rents are high enough and the central heating bills are fantastic and we simply cannot afford to live here.”

It was also reported by Mr Jones, the housing manager, that there was “enormous movement” out of the Billybanks into private accommodation.

Cllr. Toye said, “We may have plenty of flats available after April.”

Referring to the Council house waiting list the manager said it was a lot less than five years ago and Mr Jones considered that they might have to let them to people who could afford to pay for them and not so much to people who were qualified by length of time on the waiting list.”
