A BARRY-based radio station set to launch in Penarth has picked up a national award in recognition of its volunteers’ work to deliver local radio across the Vale of Glamorgan.

Bro Radio, the community radio station for the Vale, picked up the "Station Of The Year" award at the Community Radio Awards 2020 event, broadcast on Facebook Live, on Saturday December 12.

The Community Radio Awards aim to recognise the work of the 300+ volunteer-led community radio stations across the UK, with 96 stations putting in nominations this year.

Bro Radio was one of two Welsh stations to feature in the top three, with North Wales based Mon FM picking up Bronze in the category.

The good news didn't end there for Bro Radio with the station also picking up a Silver award for its 2020 General Election Hustings event.

Operations Director Nathan Spackman said of the station's achievements: "We were delighted to be nominated for this award but to win it is unbelievable.

"2020 has been a challenging year for everyone and this win is a celebration of the station and our wonderful team of volunteers, who work so hard to create brilliant local radio for the Vale of Glamorgan.

"I can't thank every member of our team, the local businesses and everyone in our community who supports the work which we do - thank you."

Bro Radio is available on 98.1 & 100.2fm, online, mobile and on smart speakers and is set to launch on 106.1fm in Penarth in 2021, with plans to be available on DAB across the region.
