EIGHTEEN people were fined at three different indoor gatherings in Barry on the weekend. Two of those fined had travelled from London.

They were just some of the 160 people who were fined by South Wales Police for breaching Covid-19 regulations over the past weekend.

Most of the breaches related to house parties and indoor gatherings.

Among those fined or reported for summons were 13 people at a birthday party in Mount Pleasant, Swansea, 10 people at a house party in Aberfan, 30 at a party in Riverside, Cardiff.

103 people were fined or issued with summons from eight house parties in Cathays, 12 people at a property in Cardiff Bay, three people at an address in Adamsdown, Cardiff, another three at a gathering at an address in Aberdare. 10 people were fined at a house gathering in Fairwater, Cardiff and eight people from two separate gatherings indoors at St Mellons, Cardiff.

A number of businesses and licensed premises across South Wales were also visited by police and council officers.

The joint enforcement teams will also consider retrospective action for a number of breach reports by individuals.

The breaches came just after the stay home restriction was lifted and replaced with a stay local message – however, this does not allow for indoor gatherings of anyone not in your household bubble.

Chief superintendent Andy Valentine said: “I’d ask the public to approach these changes in restrictions responsibly and with caution, and not risk undoing all that has been achieved to date.

“Our officers will continue to be out in our communities, engaging with the public to ensure these latest changes are understood, and encouraging people to do the right thing.

“Where necessary, we will continue to take enforcement action and work with our partners, particularly the local authorities, to tackle deliberate and flagrant breaches of the public health regulations.

“However, as restrictions ease, personal responsibility will be even more important in bringing the pandemic to an end.”
