THE Great Get Together is all about bringing communities across the UK together and making us more connected, running over one weekend of community (Friday 18 to Sunday, June 20) across the UK.

Now in its fifth year, the weekend of community is inspired by the belief that we have ‘far more in common than that which divides us’, the powerful words of the late Jo Cox MP.

It aims to bring communities together, following Jo’s murder in 2016.

Every summer since 2017 more people across the UK are getting involved, with 1,000s of events of all sizes from Garden Parties to Iftars, from Walks to Virtual Quizzes.

This year’s Great Get Together Llantwit Major – run by volunteers in Wales’ first More in Common group  - will take place on Saturday 19 June from 10am to 1pm at CF61, Station Road, Llantwit Major in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Laura Henderson, founder of More in Common Llantwit, explains: "The community spirit and resilience we have seen throughout the pandemic has shown just how much more in common we really have.

"From mutual aid groups to neighbourly acts of kindness, we have seen communities come together to support each other in new and inspiring ways.

"We want the Great Get Together to be a space to celebrate these new connections and encourage further community engagement.

"This year, our local Great Get Together is a mix of chances to connect online and face to face.

"So you can join us on Saturday at CF61 for Chatty Café, Chatty Book Corner or Plant Llantwit Seed and Plant Swap, hold your own Great Get Together Garden or Street Party at a time that suits over the weekend, or see just how well you really know the town in our #LoveLlantwit Quiz online.

"We’re particularly excited to host a circular ‘town to coast’ Great Walk Together marking Refugee Week. Great Walk Together Llantwit Major will start at 4pm on Saturday 19 June. Numbers are limited within coronavirus guidance, so do book in advance.

"We are so delighted to be linking up again with GVS and CF61, and fellow volunteers from Plant Llantwit and the Llantwit Major Local History society to create something that celebrates what is so special about this historic, beautiful place, and shows real community spirit in action.

"We’re driven by the importance of connecting, something we’ve all understood is so vital through this difficult year.

"Please pop by to join us, take part at home or join in online. And if you’d like to get more involved with More in Common Llantwit, please do get in touch.”

Great Get Together Llantwit Major is free, with any donations welcome to help fund future local More in Common events and Chatty Café.
