COLEG Gwent’s City of Newport Campus opened their new facilities and equipment available for learners at the college.
With courses in automotive, motorsport, mechanical and electrical engineering, Coleg Gwent offers learners access to the latest techniques and state-of-the-art equipment to prepare them for a successful career in the ever-changing engineering industry.
As term starts and new learners join Coleg Gwent this September, the college is excited to unveil a suite of new equipment across its campuses, as well as refreshed facilities for automotive and engineering students at the City of Newport Campus.
To prepare learners for a future in the engineering and automotive industries, Coleg Gwent has invested in a range of high-tech new equipment for learners at their Newport, Crosskeys and Blaenau Gwent campuses.
Learners can look forward to working on a brand-new Tesla Model 3, VW E Golf, Nissan Leafs, BMW I3, and an Electric Nissan Light Van, giving the skills needed to work on the electric vehicles of the future.
John Sexton, director of faculty, said: “It’s wonderful that Coleg Gwent is prepared to invest heavily in 21st century engineering so that our students can have the best and most up-to-date experience when studying at the college.”
The campus has undergone a thorough refurbishment of all the workshops and changing spaces for the academic year, making the facilities bright, airy and spacious.
As the college strives for future-proof teaching and learning in this field, Coleg Gwent’s engineering, automotive, and mechanics learners at the City of Newport Campus will be working in modern, fresh workshops that reflect the contemporary vehicles and equipment they’re working on.

John Griffiths MS enjoyed a tour of the facilities on Monday, September 20, and said: “Coleg Gwent have recognised the type of green skills our local and national economies will need in the years ahead and responded proactively in the delivery of their engineering teaching, which includes their automotive and electric vehicle courses.
“We will only reduce our carbon emissions by investing in cleaner and greener technologies and I am pleased to see this happening in Newport.
“It’s great to see the students at Coleg Gwent getting involved in this type of exciting learning and work.
“The skills they are developing on these courses will be critical for what they choose to do next and their future aspirations.”
The college also has all the necessary electric vehicle tooling and diagnostic software, new Snap-On vehicle lifts, new lathes, new milling machines including a CNC 5 axis machine, a new construction simulator, and a range of engineering rigs and specialist kit.
