WORK to prevent flooding in Sully and Dinas Powys is under way.

The Welsh Government has given the Vale of Glamorgan Council more than £140,000 to investigate how to make Dinas Powys homes more resilient to flooding.

Flood protection measures at numerous Sully properties has already begun.

This follows both areas being badly impacted by floods that hit parts of South Wales in 2020.

Nearly 250 properties at risk of flooding in Dinas Powys have recently been offered individual surveys to assess their suitability for flood resilience adaptations. Information gathered from these surveys will be used to establish an indicative cost for work before seeking additional funding.

Meanwhile, defences such as flood doors and door barriers are being installed at homes in Sully to help them better cope with flooding.

Work to identify the cause of the flooding at the end of 2020 is also taking place, to reduce the overall risk of future floods in Dinas Powys and Sully.

This is being caried out in collaboration with other risk management agencies, including Natural Resources Wales and Dwr Cymru Welsh Water.

Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for neighbourhood services and transport, said: “The flooding of properties in Dinas Powys and Sully in late 2020 brought with it serious trauma for those involved.

“I am hugely sympathetic to anyone who sees their home engulfed in water, the damage and disruption that causes and the worry that it could happen again.

“As a council, we must make sure we do all we can to minimise the risk of such an awful event being repeated.

“I’m delighted that we have been able to secure this funding to explore ways to improve the situation in Dinas Powys and that some flood defence work has already started in Sully.

“Both developments are important steps towards ensuring vulnerable properties are better protected in the future.”
