AS THE cost of living continues to rise, older people in the Vale are being reminded of the financial entitlements available to them.

With inflation rising, along with higher costs for energy, fuel, and food, some older people on limited budgets will be hit hard – the Vale of Glamorgan Council and the county’s 50+ strategy forum are promoting discounts and financial privileges available for older people.

Older people are sometimes unaware of entitlements – meaning that they often go unclaimed.

Examples of the entitlements on offer include:

  • Pension credits and boosts - a benefit for people over State Pension age that tops up income;
  • Council tax reduction - this may be a total or partial discount depending on circumstances;
  • Housing benefit– support to help pay rent;
  • Attendance allowance – available for older people who may need extra help to stay independent at home;
  • Carers allowance – a benefit for those who are involved in caring for someone else;
  • Heating Benefits – a winter fuel payment to help pay bills.

Lynda Wallis, executive chairwoman of the Vale 50+ Strategy Forum, said: “There are millions of pounds that is unclaimed by older people because they are not aware that they are entitled to claim it.

“With the rising cost of living it is really important that older people are made aware of the extra money that is available to them.”

Cllr Ben Gray, Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for social care and health, added: “The last few months have been difficult for people as the cost of everyday life shoots up.

“Older people may be among those impacted most by this situation so we want to draw people’s attention to a number of financial entitlements available to this group, depending on their circumstances.

“We offer a Council Tax reduction in certain instances, while it may also be possible to boost your pension or receive an extra allowance if a carer. Many other services are also available for free or at a discounted rate to those over 50.”
