FAIRFIELD Primary School is in the heart of Penarth, welcoming in children from the town and surrounding areas.

The school aims to engage everyone as happy, ambitious, capable learners who are confident, creative, and healthy individuals, ready to contribute to the future of Wales and the wider world.

Fairfield Nursery (Dosbarth Meithrin) has been open at the school – which first opened in 1953 – since January 2018 with 24 children currently attending the nursery.

Staff at the nursery have established a safe, happy, caring environment for children from the age of three ahead of them joining reception.

“We provide a stimulating environment where the children gain confidence and independence,” said nursery lead Mrs Weir.

“We work together with parents and carers to make sure all children are settled and happy in nursery, giving them the best opportunity to achieve their full potential while in nursery and throughout the school.

“If necessary, support plans for learning and behaviour are put in place to further support the children who may have additional learning needs.”

Children in Dosbarth Meithrin are encouraged to learn as they play, with a focus on investigating, experimenting, problem solving and decision making.

This links in with the motto of Fairfield Primary School which is: “Living, working, and playing together.”

Nursery pupils do this through a wide range of practical first-hand experiences in the large indoor and outdoor areas and school grounds. The nursery has a vast array of resources to stimulate children’s curiosity and encourage their creativity and imagination while helping them to learn.

“The children develop their physical and mental skills through play and their social skills are developed through their interaction with other children and adults in the setting,” added Mrs Weir.

“The children enjoy learning in the natural environment, regularly taking part in Forest School activities within our wonderful school grounds.

“Forest School activities encourage their independence, communication skills and increases their knowledge of the environment, the natural world, and the world around them.”

Children at the nursery also enjoy walks in the local area.

Fairfield Nursery also has a wraparound facility available on site through BearPak – which is registered with the Care Inspectorate Wales (CIW) – to support with additional childcare needs. There is a breakfast and after school club available for nursery age pupils at Fairfield.
