The Queen’s Baton Relay visited Ceredigion on Thursday, June 30, as part of its journey through Wales, ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games this July.

The baton was carried to Llangrannog, where it stayed overnight before moving onto north Pembrokeshire on Friday, July 1.

The arrival of The Queen’s Baton had arrived at Plascrug Leisure Centre, Aberystwyth, and was welcomed by local school pupils and dignitaries.

A debate on Climate Change took place where the children had the opportunity to raise questions with elected Council members and officers.

The Queen’s Baton Relay then continued its journey, where it was passed between Baton Bearers, to Aberystwyth Bowling Club and then on to the Vale of Rheidol Railway.

A total of 18 Baton Bearers took part in Ceredigion; 16 Ceredigion athletes who have gained international honours in their chosen sports and two members of the community who have been recognised for their contribution to the community.

They included Aberaeron cyclist Fin Tarling, Lampeter footballer Casi Gregson, Aberaeron wheelchair basketball player Daniel Berry, Lampeter bowler Melanie Thomas.

Lampeter’s most renowned bowling family are well represented with Alis Butten and her brother Hari acting as bearers. Their mum, Anwen, is looking forward to competing at her sixth Commonwealth Games.

Joining them were Ciliau Aeron’s Hawys Medi Richards, of The Vale of Rheidol Railway, in recognition of the contribution volunteers make in the county.

Leader of Ceredigion County Council, Councillor Bryan Davies said: “It has been great that we have been able to give the Queen’s Baton Relay such a warm welcome here in Ceredigion.

"It has been an opportunity to celebrate some of our local athletes as Baton Bearers, give recognition to volunteers who have made a positive impact in the community, and also showcased our County both nationally and internationally.”

Catrin M.S. Davies, Ceredigion County Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Leisure and Customer Services, said: “It's great to see so many residents of the county being part of welcoming the baton to Ceredigion.

"Each is a great ambassador, whether it is a champion in sport, athletics or cycling; or has shown courage in receiving medical treatment. They are an inspiration to us all."
