Phoenix Weir relished every second of his Boy’s Singles match at Wimbledon on Saturday and now he is eyeing up an appearance at the Junior US Open.

It was not a first taste of the All England Club for Nottingham’s Weir, having played in the Boy’s Doubles a year ago.

This year marked his bow in the Singles event and though he was beaten 6-3 6-3 by Alexander Blockx of Belgium, it was an encouraging experience for the 16-year-old.

“It went well. It was a great atmosphere, I really enjoyed it,” said Weir.

“I just couldn’t really get going at the start and it took me a while to get going. Overall, I really enjoyed it - it’s probably the only tennis match I’ve enjoyed losing. It was good to be there.

“I played last year here, so it’s not a new feeling but it’s one that’s hard to get used to. It’s tough, but I’ll be alright.”

Playing in SW19 is a dream come true for Weir, who was in the stands for the classic Wimbledon final between Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer eight years ago.

He added: “It’s the best feeling as a tennis player for sure. It’s one of the most prestigious sporting places in the whole world so it’s great to play here and I’m really looking forward to doing it again soon.

“I remember watching Roger Federer play Novak Djokovic in a final, I think that was 2014. That was a great experience when I was really young. I was around eight, so it was great.

“Playing here has been my highlight this year. I went to Florence as well, that was really nice and I enjoyed that, but this definitely tops the rest.”

Having had a taste of junior action at Wimbledon, Weir’s target is now playing further junior Grand Slams elsewhere.

With less than two months until the junior event at the US Open before, the 16-year-old has set the target of an appearance at Flushing Meadows.

Weir said: “I want to try and play the US Open juniors as well. That’s in a few months so that’s the aim at the moment, and then maybe some men’s events as well.

“I imagine it’s nearly as good as here before. I’m sure the atmosphere’s great, so it would be a great experience for sure.”
