THERE is a threat to GP services in the area, that is the opinion of one councillor after explosive revelations were made about a GP closing in Penarth.
An online community news outlet claimed town councillors made assertions Redlands Surgery, on the towns Redlands Road, was to close, leaving Penarth with just one remaining GP surgery.
However Cardiff and Vale University Health Board hit back at the claims, going to the extent of asking for the article to be taken down.
Vale County councillor Christopher Franks, of Plaid Cymru, has now weighed in saying there is a threat to surgeries in the area.
It comes as Albert Road surgery closed, with some patients being transferred to surgeries in Cllr Franks’ ward of Dinas Powys.
On whether Redlands surgery was to close, Cllr Franks said the health board has ben firm in their denial.
“Anything with the health board you have to take with a pinch of salt but they have been but they have been categorical with this, said Cllr Franks.
Cllr Franks said he feels there is a threat to services, saying he may know of one surgery in the Penarth area considering their future.
“My feeling is there is a threat to GP services in the area,” continued Cllr Franks.
“Albert Road closed and one other surgery could be considering their future.”
Cllr Franks did mentioned the fabled “health hub”, saying delays had affected the project, but it did seem to be moving along now.
“We are trying to find out information about the health hub,” said Cllr Franks.
“There has been a three-year delay but it looks like the health board are picking it up now.”
There have been rumours flying about the future of Redlands Surgery
Rumours a surgery in Penarth under threat of closure denied by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board
An online community news outlet claimed town councillors made assertions Redlands Surgery, on the towns Redlands Road, was to close, leaving Penarth with just one remaining GP surgery.
The outlet claimed councillors had raised fears about its closure in the most recent town council meeting, held on February 9.
It was reported that councillors said Redlands Surgery was, “due to close sometime in the near future”, and one councillor allegedly suggested it would happen in five months.
The health board have demanded an article be taken down
However, the health board have hit back at the report, saying staff at the surgery need to be able to focus on giving people care.
“Cardiff and Vale University Health Board would like to confirm there is no truth in the rumours that Redlands Surgery in Penarth is due to close,” said a spokesperson.
“Unfortunately, there has been an inaccurate story shared on a local online platform for Penarth, and the Health Board has reached out to them to request the story is removed.
“We appreciate these rumours will have caused some concern in the community and amongst other GP surgeries in Penarth, but Redlands Surgery is remaining open.
“We would ask the community to please not contact their GP Practice to discuss this so the staff can focus on delivering patient care.
“We hope this clears up any concerns you may have.”
