ON A cold and windy day, 33 youngsters from Penarth's Fairfield Primary School climbed Pen-y-Fan.

The pupils, ranging from four to 11, made it to the summit on Sunday, April 30, despite the weather being against them.

They also managed to complete a number of challenges set along the way.

Whilst the mist at the summit meant they weren’t rewarded with the wonderful views of the Brecon Beacons, their hard work has paid off with their fundraising efforts and they are smashing their £1,000 target.

The money will be spent on educational equipment and resources.

Penarth Times:

Mel Ford, Fairfield PTA Chair, said: “We would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who sponsored the children.

"The children were so determined and exceeded all expectations.

"We had planned a picnic in the sunshine at the top, whilst taking in the view, instead we had a few tears as they battled the cold and the wind, but still they made it.

“We are incredibly proud of all those who took part and for raising such an impressive amount of money for their school.”

The children were each awarded a well deserved medal in recognition of their achievement.

Penarth Times:

The PTA will continue to plan further fundraising events for the school, but the Pen-Y-Fan climb is planned to become an annual fixture – hopefully with better weather next time.
