NURSES were on strike today outside Llandough Hospital.

It comes as the Royal College of Nursing Wales (RCN) calls for meaningful negotiations with the Welsh Government's minister for health and social services Eluned Morgan to try to resolve the dispute.

Speaking ahead of the strike action, which took place yesterday and today, June 7, RCN Wales director Helen Whyley said picket lines will continue unless the situation is resolved.

“Until the minister for health and social services re-opens meaningful negotiations to try to resolve our dispute, we will, once again, stand shoulder to shoulder on the picket lines across Wales.”

RCN staff member Laura James explained why the nurses were on strike.

“I am here to support the picket line and to support our members who are fighting for fair pay and safe staffing,” said Ms James.

In May, RCN Wales voted to reject the pay offer for NHS staff in Wales, an offer that was accepted by the majority of other unions.

On the decision, Ms Whyley, said: “To take strike action is not taken lightly by us or our membership. Nursing is the largest part of the NHS workforce and they require an offer that matches their true value.”

The union has said further strike action could take place on July 12 and 13 unless Ms Morgan reopens what the RCN describes as meaningful negotiations that value the nursing profession.
