IT’S still going on and residents have had enough!

The horrendous drilling sound that goes on from 9am to 4pm Monday to Friday and can be as loud as a motorcycle engine, is still droning on as Vale of Glamorgan Council and contractors Pegasus continue digging at the building site on Coldbrook Road East, at a snail’s pace.

More residents have now come forward saying both their mental and physical health is being affected as they keep getting told the work will take that bit longer.

‘How inconsiderate of them’

Sue Short, who lives on Church Terrace, opposite the site, made a heartbreaking plea for the work to stop because of the impact it is having on her and her job.

Ms Short, who works from home for the NHS, said: “It has driven me to distraction. I have tried moving my desk in every room in my home to avoid the noise but there is no solution.

“If we wanted to enjoy an afternoon in the garden on a nice sunny day, that would be impossible.

“Not only do we have to put up with the drilling, but the dust on my windows and windowsills inside my house is beyond. It’s a complete health hazard."

‘We pay our rates. We should get a reduction’

We went to meet Michael Edwards, 82, who lives on Elm Grove, 300 metres away from the site.

Mr Edwards had a chronic cough when we spoke to him that he could not shift. He said it was to due to his asthma being exasperated by the dust from the building site.

His wife, Christine Edwards, 75, said the couple being expected to just put up with the disturbance is unfair.

“We pay our rates,” said Mrs Edwards. “We should have a reduction for what we have had to put up with.”

‘Contractor doing everything, but behind on rock-breaking programme’

A sign on the boardings round the site shows the area is being developed into 20 energy efficient apartments.

Vale Council has once again been unable to give a definitive answer to our requests to find out when the drilling will stop.

“The contractor advises that the main bulk of the rock-breaking activity will be completed by the end of July 2023,” said a council spokesperson.

“In the future, there will be isolated days of breaking out to get drainage and service runs in, but this will be less frequent that it has been of late.

“The contractor is moving as quickly as the rock breaking allows but are behind programme because of the additional rock that requires removal and the difficult site conditions.

“The contractor is doing everything they can to get this phase of the works completed as quickly and responsibly as possible, to move on and get the foundations in and the building frames erected.

“The contractor has for months delayed rock-breaking activity until 9:00am each morning and have, for the moment cancelled any Saturday working, in a conscious effort to try and mitigate the noise impact and show some consideration to the surrounding residents.

“We have attached the contractors July 2023 newsletter to evidence that they frequently communicate with local residents.”
