POLICE receive hundreds of calls every day, but being told someone had crashed into some sandbags by the side of the road must have been one of the stranger ones...

In Penarth on Saturday, July 15, one motorist had to do just that when he crashed into a barrier and sandbags on the side of Windsor Road heading up the hill past Cogan towards the town.

The incident happened at around 4pm just after the rail bridge, with pictures showing a Volkswagen van jutted half into the road half out and resting in the barrier.

Both police and fire services attended to remove the vehicle.

Police have confirmed there was no suspicious activity around the incident and no arrests were made.

A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: “We received a report just before 4.10pm from a driver saying that he had crashed into a bollard and sandbags on Windsor Road, Penarth.

“Police and South Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended. There were no injuries and no arrests have been made.”

A spokesperson for the fire service added: “At approximately 4.09pm on Saturday, July  15, 2023, we received reports of a road traffic collision on Windsor Road in Penarth.

“A crew from Penarth Fire Station attended the scene alongside emergency service colleagues.

“One vehicle collided with a road barrier.

“A stop message was received at approximately 5.33pm.”
