A SET of new one-bedroom flats for the over-55s have opened in Penarth.

Each of the 14 new properties in St Cyres can accommodate two people, with the scheme including dedicated parking bays and a low-maintenance communal garden.

After an assessment of the local housing need, the council has identified a need for additional housing for those aged 55 and over.

Nick Jones, operational manager of Public Housing Services said: “There are currently more than 6,000 households on the waiting list for social housing in the vale, including a significant number of older people.

“The ageing population in the Vale will mean greater numbers of older people will need safe, secure, and accessible accommodation. We hope these new council flats will provide new tenants with a forever home.

“Aimed at those over 55, the flats have been designed to accommodate the needs of older residents and will enable them to form close friendships with neighbours of a similar age.”

The rooms have been specially adapted for those with mobility issues, including a lift to all floors, storage facilities, widened hallways and wet rooms in each property.

There are a total of three floors with each apartment having a bedroom, kitchen, lounge area and wet room.

The flats are situated in front of St Cyres Court next to the sports grounds and St Cyres secondary school, they have all been allocated through the Homes 4 U scheme.

Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Lis Burnett said: “We were impressed with the newly completed flats. They are finished to the highest standard and they have been specially designed for those with mobility issues.

“They have beautiful views over the playing fields and surrounding countryside, and we are sure the residents will be welcomed by the nearby community.

"Properties like this which offer a warm and secure environment are in high demand. We hope everyone moving in over the coming weeks is happy and comfortable in their brand-new, purpose-built homes.”
