TEENAGERS across Barry have been celebrating today after collecting their GCSE results.

Among those picking up their results at Mary Immaculate High School in Wenvoe was Rutendo Chagweta, who had to catch up on two years’ worth of exams after arriving from South Africa.

She received seven A* grades, two As and a C.

She said: “I am feeling extremely excited! This day has been long awaited.

"I am grateful to all my teachers who helped me on this journey and for always being there for me, especially when I joined the school so late in October.

"I am looking forward to joining St David's College where I will study Chemistry, Maths and IT."

Head boy Gwilym Evans also overcame a difficult few months after a cancer diagnosis in his family and a wait for an ADHD diagnosis, but despite the obstacles in his way he achieved top marks.

Gwilym was overwhelmed by his results of five A*s, two As and five Bs, saying: “I am feeling amazed. I didn't expect this at all. I am proud of myself.

"I am going to Bishop of Llandaff Sixth Form to study English, Sociology, History and Business at A-level."

"They have worked hard and, with the support of their teachers, have achieved some of the best results in recent years.

"We are so proud of our Mary Immaculate family and we know that they will go on to great things. We wish them all the best for a wonderful future!”

Richard Gwyn Catholic High School also enjoyed a successful year, with 73 per cent of pupils awarded with 5 A*-C grades, and 27 per cent of pupils getting five A*-As.

Headteacher David Blackwell said: "I am over the moon and so proud of the achievements of all pupils.

"These results are evidence of the outstanding work of pupils and the dedication of our staff."
