A PENARTH community centre has been granted an alcohol licence after applying late last year.

The Lower Penarth Community Centre on Brockhill Way has seen a great level of investment over the past few years from enhanced security, professional audio/visual systems, and CCTV.

Now trustees at the Lower Penarth Community Association have announced that they have been successful in gaining an alcohol license.

After gaining the licence the committee is hoping to expand the range of activities to benefit the local community including introducing a community cinema.

Jon Dewis, chair of the Lower Penarth Community Association said: “We have been successful in applying for an alcohol licence which was granted in the latter part of 2023.

“The hall is busy most days of the week, but the committee are keen to increase the range of activities that would benefit the local community.

“To this end, we are currently collaborating with a local film company to launch a community cinema showing films both old and new at a reduced rate.”

The future of the popular community centre is once again in doubt and trustees are in urgent need of finding additional trustees.

He added: “All of this activity depends on a committed and experienced management committee.

“We are now in a position where all our hard work is in jeopardy due to an urgent need for additional trustees.”

The trustees are in urgent need of a secretary and a booking secretary to help run the centre smoothly.

The hall is home to a diverse range of groups of all ages from babies through to senior citizens, in addition, the hall is available to hire.

The centre is looking for volunteers to fill these vacancies:

  • Secretary – duties include, liaising with the local authority regarding repairs, engaging contractors to carry out maintenance activity, contract management and the provision of support to the Chair of the management committee. The main requisite for this role is a willingness to get involved and a can-do attitude, ideally, experience with Microsoft software would be beneficial.
  • Booking Secretary – this involves the management of the community online booking system, confirming bookings, informing the Treasurer of invoices to be sent and liaison with hirers.
