TWO brothers are veering away from their passion for rugby to move into the culinary industry with their smash burgers.

Sion and Tomos Hill are very much rugby-mad – Sion, 17, still plays for Cardiff Harlequins, and it’s probably handy older brother Tomos, 18, has such ambition to produce amazing burgers – something that must be appreciated after 80 minutes on the pitch!

Tomos is serving his smash burgers at the Crafty Devil in Penarth and having started slowly, taking his time to get the recipe fine-tuned, him and brother Sion are now prepared and ready – just as the Six Nations is about to begin!

We tried the burgers ahead of the tournament and let me tell you, Tom’s burgers will serve as a fantastic treat for halftime, or pre-game, or post game – how about all three!

Tom’s trick is a splash of water. At the end of the cooking, he sprinkles a little water on the grill and captures the steam which brings the whole burger together beautifully, creating a moist juicy burger – which (our pet hate when it happens) doesn’t fall apart from being too overloaded.

We had the single and double patty which came with BBQ sauce, pickles, and crispy onion and a side serving of chips garnished in coriander and fresh onion.

To complement Tom’s burgers, Crafty Devil also have their famous Six Nations special lager back – this time it is called Hymns and Arias, a session pale ale, just 3.7 per cent – light, crisp and refreshing – it’s a beer that allows you to enjoy it all day from game one to game X as the rugby marathon is set to begin!

Probably the most important question of this whole exercise was asking Tomos and Sion how Wales will get on.

The brothers were shall we say realistic, not predicting Wales to win the tournament, but not get the wooden spoon either.

Crafty Devil will, as always, be showing all the Six Nations games on the big screen.

Tom’s Smashed Burgers are served from Thursday and Fridays, 5pm to 9pm and Saturdays midday until 9pm.
