Two cousins are set to raise money for Hywel Dda University Health Board as a thank you for the care their grandad receives.

Lowri Elen Jones, 19, from Peniel, and Lisa Ann Evans, 21, from Llangybi, have arranged a charity ball, raffle and auction to help fund therapeutic gardens at Prince Philip Hospital.

Their grandad, Hywel Griffiths, is a patient at the hospital's Bryngolau Ward.

Planning for the event is in high gear, with Bronwydd Hall, Carmarthen set as the venue on June 15 at 7pm.

Mr Griffiths' granddaughters were spurred into action after realising the questionable state of the outdoor areas at the wards.

Mr Griffiths has been a patient at Bryngolau Ward since last August.

The Prince Philip Hospital Gardens Appeal seeks to create new therapeutic gardens for patients at the Bryngolau Ward and the Mynydd Mawr Ward, both of which are dedicated to the care of older adults.

Staff, currently with access to an unutilised outdoor space, view the proposed gardens as beneficial to patients in terms of vitamin D exposure and mental well-being.

Lowri said: "This worthy cause is very close to our hearts as a family.

"We have decided to hold a ball to raise money for the appeal to show our appreciation and gratitude to the ward.

"My grandfather is an ex-farmer, so he is used to all the fresh air and being out in all weathers.

"Back in August 2023, he got moved to Bryngolau Ward. Knowing that the outdoor area wasn't suitable for the patients was disappointing, bearing in mind how important vitamin D is to our mental health, let alone to a patient that is in care to improve their mental health.

"These gardens will benefit all patients on the ward whatever their background."

Tickets for the ball sold out in less than a week which the cousins said was overwhelming.

"Our aim is to raise as much money as possible to able to help all patients, staff and visitors on the ward."

Nicola Llewelyn, head of Hywel Dda Health Charities, also expressed her gratitude to the cousins.

She said: "We’d like to say a huge thank you to Lowri and Lisa for organising such a fantastic event in aid of the Appeal.
