Labour's Emma Wools, who has been the deputy commissioner for a number of years, will be taking over from Alun Michael as South Wales police and crime commissioner.

The role of a PCC is to make sure that the local police force in their area is meeting the needs of the community, as well as cutting crime and delivering an effective and efficient service.

They are elected by the public to hold chief constables and the police force to account on their behalf.

The South Wales PCC is paid £86,700 and serve a four-year term.

Andrew RT Davies: The pressure this now puts on the Labour Government

Commenting on today’s Police and Crime Commissioner election results in Wales, leader of the Welsh Conservatives, Andrew RT Davies MS, said: “These results prove that the next General Election is far from a foregone conclusion.

“Vaughan Gething has lost in his own backyard, and there are many promising county results across the board, with the Welsh Conservatives winning in Powys, Conwy, Denbighshire, Monmouth, and the Vale of Glamorgan.

“We will keep up the pressure on Labour in Wales, who are more interested in their vanity projects like 20mph than growing our economy and improving our Welsh NHS.”

Welsh Liberal Democrats have announced their best ever result in a Police and Crime Commissioner election in Wales

The Welsh Lib Dems have managed to gain a 10.3% share of the vote across Wales, a remarkable increase compared to the last PCC election which saw them gain only 5.2%.

The party, who have run candidates in all four areas, have recorded increases in the vote share across the board. With the biggest increases coming in Gwent (11.82% of vote this time compared to 4.27%) and South Wales (11.1% of vote this time compared to 4.6%).

Other areas also saw increases, with Dyfed Powys recording a vote share of 10.1% (up from 8.7%) and North Wales recording a vote share of 8.3% (up from 4.3%).

Party leader Jane Dodds MS has expressed her delight at the results, which bring “plenty of positives” for the party who are hoping for an impressive showing in the upcoming general election.

Commenting, leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats Jane Dodds MS said: “I am delighted with our results in this election, which signals massive progress from us as a party.

"These results not only prove that we are a legitimate threat to the ‘status quo’ here in Wales, but they also show our potential as a party to go even further.

"I’d like to thank everyone who worked so hard over the course of these past few weeks to deliver these results for us, your continued support and hard work will steer us towards a positive result in the upcoming general election.”
