A LIVE entertainment venue was evacuated after a 'threatening' phone call.

Police are investigating an incident which took place on Saturday, May 4, in Cardiff, after a 'threatening' phone call was made to the New Theatre premises.

The New Theatre, located on Park Place, was evacuated shortly after the live performance for 'In The Night Garden' took place after 4pm due to reports "of a threatening phone call."

South Wales Police have confirmed: "We were called to New Theatre, Cardiff on Saturday May 4 following reports of a threatening phone call having been made to the premises.

"Officers conducted a thorough search of the premises.

"No items of concern were found."

The 'In The Night Garden' performance team have been touring around the UK to bring "your favourite characters beautifully brought to life with full-size costumes, magical puppets, and enchanting music."

"This show lasts just under an hour and your little ones will be amazed when they see a very special visit from the amazing flying Pinky Ponk."

A 'malicious hoax"

The South Wales Police force said that "a full evacuation of the theatre took place" on Saturday.

They added: "The threat is considered to be a malicious hoax" but that their "investigation is ongoing."

A spokesperson for New Theatre in Cardiff said: "During the performance of In The Night Garden we were alerted by telephone to a potentially serious incident.  We immediately reported the matter to South Wales police and the decision was made to suspend the performance and to evacuate audience members.  

"Further investigation by the police identified that there was no risk.

"We apologise to customers who were disappointed and will be processing refunds.  Given the bank holiday there may be a slight delay before funds are repaid by the banks.  Customers who booked their tickets directly through the Box Office or via Trafalgar Tickets will be refunded automatically and there is no need for them to contact us.  Customers who booked via a third-party booking site should contact their point of sale."
