Penarth’s The Pilot pub named CAMRA’s best in Wales

The Pilot has received the honour, highlighting the pub’s growing reputation within the real ale community and its dedication to quality.

(Image: Newsquest) CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) is a long-standing, independent consumer organisation founded in 1971 to promote traditional, craft-brewed beer and support well-run pubs.

Their Pub of the Year awards are considered one of the highest accolades in the UK pub industry, celebrating venues that excel in beer quality, atmosphere, service, and community focus.

Since taking over the pub in February 2024, Francois Commeureuc-Cherot and Serge Luceau have placed a stronger focus on serving high-quality, locally produced ales.

Their careful selection of cask ales is sourced from across Wales and nearby areas including Pembrokeshire, Bristol, and Aberdare.

“We are now offering a good selection of cask ales following the demand of the customers,” said Mr Commeureuc-Cherot.

The team has also introduced a food menu that blends French culinary influences with local Welsh produce, drawing from Francois French heritage, offering a unique cultural fusion alongside the pub’s traditional feel.

Local customers have described The Pilot as “the best pub in Penarth,” praising its local ale selection and high standard of service.

Alongside its award-winning ales and food, The Pilot believes in giving back to the community. From May 22 to 26, it hosted a beer festival supporting 2Wish, a charity that helps families facing the sudden loss of a child or young adult. For every beer sold, 20p was donated to the cause.

With its focus on quality, local roots, and community support, The Pilot continues to stand out as one of Wales most beloved ale pubs.
