Young rugby players celebrated Christmas in style thanks to a wave of community support.

Penarth RFC’s mini and junior teams received backing from businesses and volunteers after a fire destroyed large parts of their clubhouse at Penarth Athletic Club on December 1, forcing the multi-sport hub to close.

The blaze, which severely damaged the 120-year-old building, left coaches and parents concerned that children would miss out on their much-anticipated Christmas parties, but support quickly arrived from across the community.

Kelly Edwards, a parent, said: "We were blown away by the people who reached out with offers of space and experiences for our young players.

"Although they’ve still had rugby training and matches, we’re still reeling from the loss of the club as a multigenerational social hub so having these Christmas parties was important to show that being part of the club is about friendships as well as sport.

"These weren’t the only businesses who got in touch, and we want to thank everyone who’s offered to help us out this month."

Children were able to celebrate with their teammates thanks to the generosity of organisations across Penarth and Cardiff.

The Cogan Coronation Club welcomed the under-9s and under-10s, while the under-11s enjoyed a day out at the Principality Stadium.

Sid’s Restaurant and Bar hosted the under-12s, and Vindico Arena welcomed the under-13s. The under-14s were treated to celebrations at Coffi Co and Penarth Pier Pavilion.

The events ranged from meeting Father Christmas to a private screening of Home Alone, ensuring every child enjoyed a memorable day despite the loss of the clubhouse.

The fire broke out in the early hours of December 1, with crews from Penarth, Barry and Cardiff Central spending nearly three hours tackling the blaze.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service described the roof as “well alight” and the building as “severely damaged”.

Early indications from club officials suggest the fire may have been caused by an electrical failure, though investigations remain ongoing.

Penarth Athletic Club is a multi-sport hub and the long-time home of Penarth RFC, Penarth Cricket Club, Penarth Ladies’ Hockey Club and Penarth Men’s Hockey Club.

The fire has caused disruption across all four sports and left the community without a vital gathering place.

Despite the devastation, club officials, players and supporters have been determined to keep activities going.

A spokesperson for the club said: "The show must go on."

The club has focused on reopening part of the site safely while making plans for long-term restoration.

Specialist contractors will be required due to the scale of the damage.

In a statement, the club thanked the many individuals and businesses who had reached out with offers of support.

The strength of the community response has been described as a powerful boost during a challenging time.

The festive parties for young rugby players stood out as a symbol of that support, demonstrating how quickly residents and businesses rallied to ensure the children could enjoy a sense of normality and celebration.

Parents, coaches and club officials have all expressed gratitude to those who have helped.

Ms Edwards said: "We want to thank everyone who’s offered to help us out this month."

The loss of the clubhouse has been felt deeply in the community, but the success of the Christmas events shows that the club’s spirit is still very much alive.

With restoration plans underway and offers of help continuing to come in, Penarth Athletic Club and its associated teams are looking to the future.

The latest display of kindness and teamwork from the Penarth community has proven that even in the face of loss, the club’s values of friendship, support and togetherness remain stronger than ever.
