As LGBTQ+ History Month is marked across the UK, I would like to highlight why this period of reflection and visibility remains so important, particularly here in Wales.
LGBTQ+ history is not a side note to our national story; it is woven through our culture, our arts, our communities and our shared struggle for fairness and dignity.
Yet much of this history has too often been overlooked or silenced.
Marking LGBTQ+ History Month helps ensure that these stories are recognised, remembered, and passed on, especially to younger generations who deserve to see themselves reflected positively in public life.
In recent weeks, I have taken part in raising awareness of the “Visibility Matters” message through social media, using my own platform to show support and solidarity during this month.
Visibility may seem a small gesture, but for many people it can be powerful reassurance that they are not alone, that their lives and identities are valid, and that they belong.
At a time when public discourse can feel increasingly polarised, simple acts of visibility and inclusion still matter. They help foster understanding, empathy, and a more confident, compassionate society.
I hope that LGBTQ+ History Month continues to be marked publicly and positively in Wales, not only this February but throughout the year.
