A stricken yacht was towed to safety after suffering engine failure in a busy shipping lane.

The 42ft sailing vessel broke down 1.5 nautical miles southeast of Penarth Lifeboat Station at 4.18pm on Friday, September 25, prompting a response from RNLI Penarth.

The Atlantic 85 lifeboat arrived on scene just minutes after launching and returned to station by 6.50pm, ready for service again.

A spokesperson for RNLI Penarth said: "At 16:18 yesterday afternoon, Friday 25th Sept, we were paged by Milford Haven Coastguard to a 42ft Sailing vessel with engine failure 1.5nm SE of the lifeboat station.

"Our Atlantic 85 made best speed to the vessel, arriving on scene just a few minutes after launching.

"It was quickly confirmed that the 2 persons on board were fit and well and they had been able to lay their anchor.

"As they were in the busy shipping lane approaching high water and with a large ship heading into Cardiff Docks, they were taken under tow to Cardiff Bay, where they were placed alongside the taxi berth.

"Our lifeboats returned to station to be washed down and was made ready for service again by 18:50.

"Many thanks to Dylan Herbert for this photo of the casualty under tow!".
