WINDSOR members turned out in huge numbers on Saturday evening last to attend the annual dinner dance which was held at the Plymouth Rooms in Stanwell Road and a very memorable evening it turned out to be. In very convivial surroundings the assembled company dined well, entertained by Mostyn Cole who provided soft and mellow piano jazz during the meal.
The formal part of the evening was concluded with the presentation of the Peter Richards Memorial Trophy and the Presidents Cup to the most improved players (men's and ladies) 2004. This year the trophies were won by two fairly new members to the club who had shown a big improvement in their tennis over the past year with a great deal of commitment to the club and to their respective teams. Mrs Chris Smith, Club President, presented the Peter Richards Memorial Trophy to Colin Jones, and the President's Cup to Beth Hughes.
Further entertainment was provided by Alan James whose fine satirical rendition of two old favourites, My Way and Yesterday provided us all with a few moments to get ourselves geared up to dance the rest of the night away to rock and roll band, The Love Handels.
The evening organised by ex Chairman Jim Ryan and Social Secretary Yvonne Thomas was, as always a terrific success - combining a great night out with some spectacular fundraising.
The club are embarking on a very ambitious fundraising programme to replace the grass courts around the clubhouse with new all-weather floodlit courts. This comes hard on the heals of re-building the four lower courts in the autumn 2003.
Tim Hartland kicked off proceedings with a game of Heads or Tails - which raised £330 - Club Coach, Rob Cunningham, won the prize of £100. As always members were generous with prizes for raffle - special thanks go to St David Hotel and Spa who provided the night's star prize. Many thanks to Gill Ryan whose floral table decorations were beautiful - members were encouraged to take these home at the end of the evening for a donation to the Development Fund.
The clubs next social event is a Quiz Night on Thursday, November 18. In the meantime, the Winter Doubles League, organised by Avril Morgan and Linda Ellis will start soon.
