DO YOU remember the first football team you played for, or supported? For most people it is a lifelong relationship which can give you enormous pleasure, and sometimes heartache.
I began to follow the fortunes of Leeds United when the great John Charles played for them half a century ago. And I have stuck with them through thick and thin, ever since. Many people have similar stories of how they became a fan of their particular favourite.
Locally, of course, I have supported Cardiff City ever since I was a boy, and I can remember 40,000 plus crowds at Ninian Park. I was at Ninian in 1961 when nearly 62,000 people saw Wales play England to set the ground record that still stands.
But the club with which I have the closest links is Swan Stars, later to become Dinas Powys Football Club. I am just one of many, many people who have been involved in running the club, and helping it on its way over the years, and who are proud to see it now playing at Welsh League level.
Swan Stars celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, to be marked with a reunion at Dinas Powys
Bowling Club on Friday, October 8, from 8pm. It will be good to see old friends and chat about the good old days.
For this is what all sport, is about - camaraderie and loyalty to club and team mates. We can't all be winners, but friendships and treasured memories are worth more than any silverware - they do not lose their lustre, but shine ever brighter.
