DVD review 'The Panic Room'

This article is brought to you by our exclusive subscriber partnership with our sister title USA Today, and has been written by our American colleagues. It does not necessarily reflect the view of The Herald.

ON FIRST glance, the plot may not look like it can hold up a whole film.

The ex-wife of a huge pharmaceutical businessman buys a massive house.

On viewing the property, she discovers a 'panic room' - a small space secured with steel and state-of-the-art CCTV in the heart of her new home.

As luck would have it, on the very first night she moves, in three men break into the house, and she finds herself and her diabetic teenage daughter locked inside the very room she wanted sealed up.

But therein lies the problem.

What the three thugs want is in that room.

The movie revolves around a cat and mouse game as they try to get in, and she needs to get out to save her daughter's life.

What seems like a very weak story line actually matures into a very good flick.

Jodie Foster proves yet again why she commands respect in her career.
