TWO charitable local girls are raising funds to go to Australia and help to collect money for a local charity.
Katrina Davies, 17, of Dockdwy Road, Llandough, and Gemma Burke, 18, of St Cyres Road, Penarth, both go to St Cyres School sixth form.
They are trying to collect £2,000 each so that they can go on a two week conservation trip in July.
The Joshua Foundation will benefit from money raised as the girls need £1,000 for the travel and the other money will go to the charity.
Gemma said: "We decided to raise money when Sarah Cornelius, the founder of the charity, came to give a talk at school. Sarah's son was called Joshua, who died of cancer. When we heard the speech we could not resist the opportunity to help the foundation." She added that they had raised money already by having a raffle, a sponsored walk, and a non-uniform day.
So far Gemma and Katrina have raised about £500 of the £2,000 needed.
Katrina said: "It is nice to give something back to people who need help. We both like helping out where possible and the funds will hopefully raised by Christmas."
She added that the conservation trip to Philip Island in Australia is a Koala sanctuary.
And cash will also be raised while in the southern hemisphere.
There will be a Victorian Christmas fair in Penarth which will raise further funds for the trip.
The foundation was set up in September 1998 so that children with terminal cancer could be provided with holidays for them and their families.
Joshua's last few months in 1998 were filled with new and exciting experiences to make his life as interesting as possible.
And with the money raised by Katrina and Gemma more children can live life to the full before they are sadly taken away by cancer.
