Youngsters win first competitive game

THERE is a widely held belief that lawn bowls is a game for the elderly, with the term "old men's marbles" frequently quoted.

This belief would have been utterly contradicted by anyone witnessing the events at the Murch bowling green over the past few months, when a good number of pupils from Murch Junior School, under the tuition of the Murch coaches, have impressed all concerned with their enthusiasm and natural ability for the game.

The dedication of the youngsters was rewarded when on July 21 a team from the Murch played a competitive game against a likewise junior selection from the Cadoxton club.

Each team comprised three rinks of three players, playing ten ends of triples. In addition to a return game at the Murch green, further home and away games are planned against the juniors from the Llantwit Major Club.

The commitment of the Murch coaches was paid back by the success of the first competitive game, and the next stage will be a knockout triples competition amongst all the Murch youngsters with the final to be played at the same time as the Senior Finals, on September 6-7.
