A WELL-known Penarth man has died at his home in Redlands Road.

A devoted family man, Maxwell Evans was husband to the late Marged and a loving father to sons Iwan, 52 and Dafydd, 48 daughter Sian, 50, daughters-in-law Rosemary, 50, and Helen, and son-in-law Adrian, 41. He was a cherished grandfather of Adam, 22, Angharad, 23 Steffan, 21, Geraint, 18, and Math, 15. He died on the morning of Monday July 29.

He was also the Chaplain to the Penarth and County branches of the Royal British Legion and a member of the Probus Historical Society, where he was president from March 2001 to 2002.

A semi-retired minister, Maxwell, 79, still preached. He taught Welsh for beginners and refresher courses at his home and to members of the clergy.

Sian said: "My father was an intelligent man who doted on his grandchildren, always saying how proud he was of them.

"My lasting memory of my father will be from the weekend before he died. We travelled to Ferwig in West Wales for him to judge the carnival. He was sat on the beach with all his old friends from his first parish, laughing and joking.

"Then on the Sunday he had a barbecue with the rest of the family.

"I think if he was given a choice of how he would have spent his last weekend, he wouldn't have changed a thing. I know my father is still looking after us, he always will."

Although Maxwell moved to Cardiff at a young age, he came from West Wales.

After the service in Eglwys Dewi Sant, St Andrews Crescent, Cardiff, yesterday followed by cremation at Coychurch, there will be a service to inter Maxwell's ashes at St Dogmael's Church in Pembrokeshire on Friday August 9.

Donations in lieu of flowers will be kindly received by Ruth Goddard, The Old Rectory, Withington, Hereford, HR13QE, Treasurer for Cancer Research UK.
