A FAMILIAR sight along Fairfield Road and the route to Cornerswell Road shops will be seen no more.

Viv and Nancy Phillips, who built their home in Fairfield Road in 1948 and who are now in their late 80s, have decided that the time has come to move to live with their son Alan who works in the Computer Department of Lancaster University.

No longer will they be seen walking to do their shopping, putting younger and fitter neighbours whizzing by in their cars to shame!

An apple tree planted to celebrate Alan's birth in 1950 survives and still bears fruit in the garden of number 50 today.

Of the original inhabitants who built their homes in the road during that era only two now remain: Mrs Doreen Hyatt and Mrs Dora Hurst.

Many are the tales that have been recounted to newer neighbours of the trials and tribulations involved in the planning and building of these homes over a period of time on land that used to be allotments.

They, together with other neighbours, join in wishing Viv and Nancy continuing good health and happiness in their new home.

In so doing they welcome Ray and Vicky Evans who take over the Phillips' house, with its half century of happy memories, early in 2006.
