THE ROYAL Society for the Protection of Birds is celebrating its 100th birthday this year – and to mark the occasion the charity is holding a fortnight of events at the Washington Gallery, Stanwell Road, Penarth.
The party kicks off on Monday, October 3 at 7.30pm when world renowned wildlife photographer Andy Rouse will be giving a talk and presentation, followed by the official opening of the exhibition which includes Andy’s work and an opportunity to view four rarely seen original Tunnicliffe paintings.
Next on the list is a music night at 7.30pm on Friday, October 7 when local singer/ songwriter Jonathan Powell will be performing, with special guests Ocean Red, one of Wales’ top new bands, and rising star Al Sedgemond.
On Friday, November 14 at 7.30pm, Andy Rouse will be returning for a black tie event, the Black Grouse ‘lek’, kindly supported by Black Grouse whiskey with tastings, an auction of celebrity decorated nestboxes and live music.
Young people are well catered for too, as there will be two art and craft afternoons between 4pm and 5pm on Thursdays, October 6 and 13.
Sue Pickin, Senior Community Fundraiser, RSPB Cymru said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to the Washington Gallery for allowing us to stage our centenary celebrations at their beautiful gallery.
"Our 100th birthday is a historic milestone and a chance for us to reflect on all we have achieved over the last century to help Wales’ nature and habitats. However, there are still many challenges ahead with many of our most loved wildlife and wild places facing grave threats.
"We need to raise funds to face these challenges and by buying a ticket and attending one of these amazing events, you will be helping to save our birds and our nature, and safeguard our children’s futures. Nature is amazing – help us to keep it that way."
Tickets for all events can be purchased by calling Simon at the RSPB office on 029 2035 3000, online at www.rspbcymru.ticketsource.co.uk or at the Washington Gallery, Stanwell Road, Penarth.
