THANKS to a donation by npower, following an application by cub leader Daniel Herlihy, the 1st Penarth Scout Group has received £500 towards a new marquee.

Daniel has been a Scout helper for nearly 30 years, with most of his time supporting the eight to ten-year-old Cubs.

An electrical team leader at npower's Aberthaw Power Station, he applied for the funding through the company's Charity and Volunteering Awards, and was thrilled that his troop will benefit from the donation.

"The money will be very, very useful," said Daniel.

"The marquee will give the group a protected area when they are engaged in outdoor pursuits and activities, even when it's raining.

"It means we will be able to offer outdoor opportunities not available before such as orienteering and outdoor cooking."

The group has bought three tents with previous grants and their use is increasing.

"We are organising a camping trip to Miskin and the new tent will mean we can accommodate all 28 of the scouts," added Daniel.

As the award will cover only half of the £1,000 marquee cost, the scouts are looking for sponsors and donations to help raise the remainder of the money.
