I ATTENDED the recent Social Care and Health scrutiny meeting on December 2 to hear specifically the discussion on the future of the former Bryeithyn site.
There had been a public consultation on this and, to my knowledge, has not yet been made public which showed people wanted continuing dementia care. Despite the consultation, decisions were made quickly and quietly and the building was demolished. A case of fat cat councillors feathering their own nest - and chambers - and ignoring the views of the people and their needs. They have ignored all the facts and figures relating to Dementia, including the report by the BBC stating that at present 44 million people suffer from this dreadful disease worldwide, and this is expected to hugely increase by 2020.
Dementia does not just affect older people. It can and does affect people from their early 30s, so how can you justify putting younger suffers with older more advanced suffers? It is cruel and does not cater for their differing needs or differing levels of dementia.
The Vale of Glamorgan had a unique opportunity to develop a Centre of Excellence for dementia care right across the board but seem to be ignoring the needs of the many prefering instead to build more houses.
In fact, they seem to be intent on building so many new houses that maybe they should be renamed the Vale of Glamorgan estate agents!
