THE recent enormous traffic hold ups on Monday and Tuesday along Pen y Turnpike Dinas Powys has highlighted how inadequate the transport system is in this part of the Vale.
Apparently the delay was due to a gas leak being repaired. We all understand that this is emergency work, however leaking gas was noticed on Sunday.
So the question is was this an emergency that had to be undertaken urgently during the rush hour or should it have been carried out on the previous Sunday?
The resulting traffic chaos stretched for miles in both directions. The problem was made worse by an accident on Cardiff Road. Roads such as Pen y Turnpike should be treated as priority routes as Plaid Cymru advocates.
The condition of the Pen y Turnpike is dreadful, yet more and more motorists are being forced to use this route due to the irresponsible policies of the Vale Council. Granting planning permission for thousands of additional houses without providing decent public transport or better roads is bizarre.
The road is being pounded with a string of potholes appearing along the edge of the carriageway. This forces motorists into the centre of the narrow road adding to dangers.
It is a disgrace that the council’s Local Development Plan was supported by the Conservatives. Now when the folly of their actions can be seen they seek to wash their hands of the responsibility of their actions.
It’s time for fresh thinking in the Vale council.
