IT is good news that the inshore lifeboat was able to assist a man who got into difficulty on the Sully Island Causeway (Penarth Times, December 9).

But why turn the whole event into a criticism of somebody who takes it upon themselves to cross to the island for a few photographs on a beautiful icy day. In this age of obesity we should be celebrating people who are still up for a bit of a challenging walk. I agree the tide times should have been checked more carefully.

With the story on the front page of Penarth Times is a photograph of the sign warning people of dangerous tides. But why doesn’t someone (the council or the coastguard) put up the tide times in an equally prominent place, and make recommendations for periods when the causeway can be safely crossed.

I was amazed that no such information is displayed when I moved to the area recently.
