SULLY Sports Bowls Club held its Finals Day and although the weather was not up to much the bowling certainly was top class.

The day started cool, dull and damp, but after a couple of heavy showers mid-morning brightened, and warmed, up to the joy of both the bowlers and spectators alike.

First on was the Pairs Championship, with Graham Brown and John Harries taking on Alan Collard and Bob Matthews.

The lead changed hands a few times early on, before Graham & John built up a 11-4 lead by the 8th end.

Bob & Alan fought back to take a 13-12 lead on the 13th, which they slowly stretched to stand on the last end with a 21-17 lead.

Despite great bowling on the 21st end by John & Graham, they just failed to score a 4 and take the game into an extra end, scoring a 3, and thus Bob & Alan won 21-20, in a pulsating close final.

The Handicap Championship was contested by Keith Romans and Rob Giddings, with Rob having a 7 shot (handicap) start, and defending the title he won last year.

Keith played very well in the early cold wet conditions, and raced into a 15-11 lead.

Although Keith’s form did not dip, at this point the rain ceased, and as the weather improved dramatically, so did Rob’s bowling, and he went on to win 7 of the next 8 ends to take the title by 21-17.

Graham Brown & Carol Jenkins took on Mike Stafford & Mary Dare in the Mixed Pairs Final, which was contested in a great spirit and plenty of skill from both sides.

Winning the toss Graham & Carol employed long jacks to some advantage, but even so, only led 11-10 after 12 ends, but decisively they then chalked up 12 shots to 3, over the next 5 ends, and clinched the title 2 ends later 24-14.

The 2 Woods Final featured Charles Coomber and Keith Romans, and the game had three distinctive periods. Charles won the opening 4 ends to lead 6-0, then Keith hit back winning the next 5 ends, all by a single shot, to get with a shot at 5-6 down, but as in his Handicap Final earlier Keith’s form did not drop, but Charles played superbly, from there on, to take the next 7 ends to win by 16-5.

The final game of the day was the Club Championship, which was contested by defending Champion Lee Romans, and Club Captain Graham Brown.

From the start Lee was on fire, and whatever Graham threw at him, he played like the champion he was, and took only 11 ends to retain his title by 22-3, and in the process only lost one end. Graham had had a hard day, playing in two of the earlier finals, but he still had a lot of good bowls in him, but it came down to the fact that Lee played with such skill, and touch, it was a joy to watch such a polished performance.
