DRAGONS captain Richard Hibbard and Wales centre Tyler Morgan have joined a mammoth injury list that will hinder the bid to end their Guinness PRO14 nightmare on the road in South Africa.

The Rodney Parade region have not won outside Newport in the league since beating Treviso in March, 2015 and suffered their 42nd straight loss at the Ospreys on Saturday.

The squad are preparing for a double-header of an encounter with the Kings in Port Elizabeth a week on Sunday followed by a clash against the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein the following Saturday.

Caretaker boss Ceri Jones has given his Wales contingent this week off after their Grand Slam exploits but will travel fully-loaded to South Africa, saying: “I have no intention of leaving anyone behind”.

Back row forwards Ross Moriarty and Aaron Wainwright, wing Hallam Amos and tighthead Leon Brown all started in Swansea last weekend while hooker Elliot Dee missed out after suffering a rib injury against Ireland.

The 25-year-old from Newbridge is expected to return to full training ahead of the South Africa trip, a timely boost given that they are sweating over the availability of Hibbard.

The former Wales and Lions hooker has captained the side in the absence of lock Cory Hill, who will miss the run-in after suffering an ankle scoring against England in the Six Nations.

South Wales Argus:

However, Hibbard was forced off at half-time against his former Ospreys teammates after suffering a hamstring injury in Swansea and is a doubt for the Kings clash.

Morgan is an unlikely tourist after suffering a blow to his right shoulder in the first half at the Liberty Stadium.

The 23-year-old, who was included in Wales’ autumn squad but missed out on the Six Nations, is waiting for the results of scans that will determine whether he can push for a place in Warren Gatland’s pre-World Cup training plans.

Morgan was not included in the initial squad for England 2015 but came in because of injuries to play against Fiji and in the quarter-final against South Africa.

Jones is already a glut of senior players with back row forwards Nic Cudd (knee), Ollie Griffiths (bicep), Harri Keddie (toe), James Benjamin (neck) and Lewis Evans (calf) sidelined along with props Aaron Jarvis (hamstring) and Ryan Bevington (concussion), lock Brandon Nansen (hamstring), wing Ashton Hewitt (shoulder) and fly-half Arwel Robson (hamstring).

Nonetheless, the interim head coach is hopeful of doing his chances of landing the top job on a permanent basis the power of good by ending the away hoodoo.

“We’ve spoken about how high-tempo those games are going to be,” said the forwards coach. “They both extremely quick back threes and I am sure they are going to test that side of us.

“We have to defend better, especially on the edge, and there will be a high ball-in-play time.

“Over the last month or so we have been working on our training being really high-tempo and the pace of our game.

“We showed a glimpse of that in the second half against the Ospreys when we kept the ball for 15, 20 phases. We showed we can play some really good rugby, so need to do that a bit more.”
