WITH the spring and summer competitions fast approaching the first silverware has been won at Dinas Powis Golf Club from the Winter League programme.

Paul Gibson and Jeff Haines retained the Winter greensome title beating Ian Barclay and Alan Humphries 2 &1 on a beautiful morning last Sunday.

It was a notable feat for two reasons. Firstly for managing to be victorious after finding themselves 4 down after the first 4 holes.

Secondly they are the first pair to retain the coveted trophy for 20 years when Roger Davies and Ian Johnson dominated the competition.

The match was refereed by newly installed captain for the season Stuart Walker.

Ironically Barclay & Humphries were going for a unique double themselves as a few weeks ago they triumphed in the Winter League better ball Knockout Cup by overcoming Dai Gale & Esh Mahethlehingren in a close encounter.

Single figure handicapper Barclay was gracious in defeat of the final but felt they “took their foot off the pedal” when cruising early in the contest.

The popular Presentation Winter League Dinner will take place in mid-April.

With the first spring competition (The Hird Trophy) just over a week away groundsman Julien Bartlett-Jones has been organising his staff to get the course in top condition and despite some inclement weather over the past few weeks he is confident targets can be met.

Off the course the management committee have been working tirelessly to attract new members and promote the bar and restaurant within the club now that a new chef has been appointed.

With a variety of dishes on offer the Sunday carvery is proving a big hit with both members and guests.
