THE new golfing season is well under way at Wenvoe Castle Golf Club. Various club competitions have been played since early March and more recently the start of the major tournaments with the opportunity of members getting their names engraved in gold leaf on the various honours boards.

Mixed competitions are very popular and on Easter Monday there was a large entry for the Ashton Trophy.

The course was already in magnificent condition and the players enjoyed glorious weather conditions.

The winners were Sheila Morrow and Russell Owens who posted an excellent the top score of 39 points.

Runners up were Jane Lott and Phil Yee who also scored 39 points but just missed out on the narrowest of margins with count back being used. The winning pair were congratulated by the new Club Captain Lesley Sherrard who thanked all the competitors for supporting the competition.

The first of the Men’s Board Competitions took place on Sunday and another huge entry turned out for the Celnik Cup.

The winner was Graham Robinson who posted a magnificent score of 41 points in quite tricky weather conditions with runner up Joseph Lane recording 38 points and third place went to Anthony Hobbs with 36 points.

The club really appreciates the fine work of Head Green Keeper Lucy Sellick and her team who have quickly brought the course up to superb condition after the winter months.

So too are the efforts of the administration and catering staff and it was with pleasure that club captain Lesley Sherrard took the opportunity to present team member Julie Staples with a fine clock in recognition of 25 years of excellent service with the club.
