SUNDAY 5th May at Jenner Park saw Penarth Town Raiders play Cogan Coronation Juniors in the Vale Cup final.

Cogan narrowly winning the league by 1 point from the Raiders and were attempting to do the double, while the Raiders were looking to secure back to back Cup final wins.

The rivalry and competition between these teams has always been intense, with both teams well supported from the grandstand.

Cogan started playing in their traditional formation with only one striker and a back 5 with the Raiders playing an attacking front 3.

The game for the first 10 mins was nervous and some good football being played by Cogan to keep the ball, a couple of early attacks by Cogan down the wings was easily looked after by the Raiders defence.

And after 20 mins the first real clear strike on goal was from the Raiders with the Cogan goal keeper pulling off a great save from Ryan Shallis followed by a push from behind on Daniel Ingram from Cogan to set up a free kick on the edge of the penalty area.

Up steps Harry Davies with a left footed shot that hit the post.

The game started to change with the raiders starting to attack more freely and growing into the game.

Ryan Shallis the leagues top goal scorer was continually creating havoc and tormenting the Cogan defence of which he constantly had 3 defenders marking him but the first half ended up goalless.

The second half saw again the Raiders attacking freely down the right and left, but then conceded a wonder goal from Cogan’s play maker Cam Starling a speculative punt into the Raiders goal saw the defence fail to clear their lines and not pick up Cam on the edge of the box who then volleyed the ball into the goals a contender for goal of the season for sure to make it 1-0 Cogan, their fans cheering wildly.

The Raiders continued to attack, with Ryan Shallis again getting through on goal only to have the goalkeeper make a fine save and Cogan’s desperate defence clear their lines.

The Raiders were high in confidence with Cogan just playing to deep, Ryan broke through once more with 3 defenders on him and flicked it in at the near post to make it 1-1 game on.

From the equaliser the Raiders just pushed on and Cogan were conceding corner after corner.

And with the Raiders Harry Davies left foot putting the ball into the box every time it was inevitable that a goal would come, Jacob Julian jumped and headed it in the corner to make it 2-1.

And from that the game was over, two incredible off the line clearances from the Cogan defence, and a 45 yard free kick from the Raiders that just went over the bar kept the final score line respectable but a great win for the Raiders coming back from being 1-0 down to secure a 2-1 win and back-to-back Cup final wins.
