SULLY Sports Bowls Club hosted Vale neighbours Rhoose in a friendly on Wednesday, 8th May.

Heavy rain for the start, eased to intermittent showers, but didn’t put a damper on the spirit in which it was played, nor reduced the quality of both sides’ bowling. Each team won 2 rinks each, but the Sports snatched the win on aggregate 59-46.

K Aguis’ rink down 2 shots after 6 ends, but then won the remaining 9 ends for a 16 shot win.

Lee Romans’ rink, playing a man short, were up against it for 7 ends, where they were 1-11 down, but took the next 6 ends to tie the scores at 12 shots each, with 2 ends left.

Rhoose took 2 shots on the penultimate end, but the Sports were lying 1 shot with the final bowl to come, but distress for the home side and glory to the visitors, it just travelled a few inches too much, and Rhoose had a 1 shot win.

C Coomber’s rink were behind for most of the early stages, but took a 1 shot lead on the 9th end. The last 6 ends were very close, but Rhoose took 5 of them to run out winners by 5 shots.

G Brown’s rink led from the start, but the visitors fought bravely throughout to keep in touch and the Sports held on for a 3 shot win.

On Saturday, 11th May, Sully Sports entertained Bridgend Municipal in the Carrutthers Cup and were a distant second.

The Sports won one rink by a shot, and lost another by a shot, but heavy defeats on the other two rinks gave the visitors an aggregate 96-54 victory.

K Aguis’ rink led for the first 3 ends but lost the lead on the 4th and did not regain it until the 19th, being 8 shots down at one stage, a shot on the penultimate end gave the a lead of 2 on the final end, but the visitors only managed a single, and the Sports secured a remarkable comeback win.

L Romans’ rink had a surprisingly heavy defeat, going 10 shots down in the first 4 ends, and never recovering from that to win only 4 of the 21 ends overall.

C Coomber’s rink had a close fought game, and after taking the lead on the 4th end, th built up a 7 shot lead on the 12th, only to concede 6 shots on the (unlucky) 13th.

The visitors levelled on the 14th and led by 6 shots with 2 ends remaining, but despite the Sports winning both, they fell short with Bridgend clinching a 1 shot win.

G Brown’s rink uncharacteristically fell to a heavy defeat, winning 2 of the opening 3 ends, but then only winning 4 of the remaining 18 ends.

B Whyman, L Adams, K Romans, L Romans 06-28;
