THE weather was particularly kind during the Whitsun Bank Holiday period and members and visitors took full opportunity to play and enjoy the excellent condition of the championship standard golf course.

Particularly pleasing was the increase in membership with new and returning golfers taking advantage of the very attractive offers now available.

The Laurie Jones Shield is a Ladies foursomes competition and unusually a draw is made for partners.

It was a real coincidence that draw revealed the pairing of Nicola Manning, the Club Secretary with Lucy Sellick, the Head Greenkeeper, and they ‘worked’ well to post the best score of 39 points.

The draw also paired the ‘Smiths’ Sian and Jayne who combined particularly well to score 39 points but just missed out on countback.

Bank Holiday Monday saw a large turn out for the mixed pairs competing for the Betty and Harry Broadbent Trophy using the popular and more forgiving greensomes format where both players drive and then choose which one to use. The winners Chris Tatt and Sheila Davies played well to win with a score of 37 points and will see their names go on the honours board.

Mark Gallivan and Fiona Jenkins were also in good form to finish runners up with 35 points.

Saturday provided the opportunity for Men and Ladies to take on the challenge of a medal.

The Ladies competed in the Ladies Coronation Cup/GUW Medal and Jane Lott continued her fine run of form posting the best score of net 73 and just enough to pip Lynda Campbell and Joanne Marriott who both scored net 74.

There was plenty of interest which led to a huge entry for the Men’s monthly medal. Several players were in great form and the eventual winner was Terry O’Grady with an outstanding net 69 just holding off Robert Garn who also posted a net 69 but missed out on count back.

Perhaps the defining moment was when Terry scored a superb two scored on the par 4 12th hole. Mark Donovan and Nigel Curtis both played well to record a net 70 and, on another day, could have been enough to take first prize.

Congratulations to the winners and for everyone else there will be plenty of opportunities in the weeks ahead.

With the course in remarkable condition and the subject of glowing reports by members and visitors why not take the opportunity to join a warm and welcoming members club.

Please give Nicola Manning, the Club Secretary on 02920 59471 to learn of the current offers particularly for Ladies and Young Players up the age of 35. Alternatively, all the information is on the Club Website wenvoecastlegolfclub.co.uk particularly details of the new flexible membership and opportunities for those new to golf.
