NICK Grimmitt from The Glamorganshire Golf Club lifted the Welsh Seniors title for the first time after producing three excellent rounds of golf around Aberdovey Golf Club the traditional host venue for this event.

With terrible conditions gripping most of the country, 120 competitors braced themselves for a challenging week of golf on the north Wales links.

As predicted persistent rain was the order of the day as we kicked off the event with conditions starting wet, staying wet and then getting wetter as the players progressed through their first rounds, with scoring reflecting the difficulty of the conditions.

Phill Evans (Royal Jersey Golf Club) produced arguably the round of the day with a superb level par 71, and with it being the only golfer to not finish the first day over par.

This gave Phill an early 3 shot lead over the chasing pack with eventual winner Nick four shots adrift and defending champion Colin Jones (West Sussex Golf Club) another shot further adrift as he started his title defence.

After heavy overnight rain, the fantastic Aberdovey green staff team had a job on to get the course clear of some fairly substantial areas of water.

After a lot of squeegee work and some hole position changes play started on time, and as the day progressed the conditions improved and with it so did the scoring.

Nick Grimmitt began to exert his authority on the event with an excellent one under par 70, leaving him at the top of the leaderboard as the cut fell. Phill Evans slipped back a little with a 75 but still left himself right in the mix in the championship.

Philip Sutton (Dunstable Downs Golf Club) followed up his first round 74 with a one over 72 to put himself into the final pairing and in with a great shout of going one better than his runners up spot of the previous year.

The finals days play once again began in wet conditions, but this was to improve with the early morning rain clearing for the leaders who teed off just after midday.

Nick produced another controlled round of golf to finish the day with a level par 71 giving him the overall win by three shots. Phillip Sutton had to settle for the runners up spot again with Phill Evans taking a deserved third position.
