DAVID Barrell of Wenvoe Castle Golf Club became the Glamorgan County Champion 2019 with an outstanding performance last weekend in breezy and tough conditions at the prestigious Royal Porthcawl golf course.

Against a quality field of 68 top golfers David’s steady golf in the prevailing wind conditions produced two equal rounds of 75 to post a winning score of 150 ending three strokes ahead of the runner up Tomas Williams of Maesteg Golf Club.

The title was also won the previous year by a Wenvoe Castle player, Nick James who now plays his golf at the local Vale Resort.

Nick led the field comfortably at the halfway stage with the only sub-par round of 71 but disaster struck at the par 5, 12th hole, where a score of 11 strokes put paid to his chances of successfully defending his title and he eventually finished in third place.

The winners of the Team Championship held on the same weekend were Neath Golf Club with an aggregate of 485 and Ryan Nedza also of Neath became the Colts Champion 2019.

David is a scratch golfer and an important member of the Wenvoe Castle 1st team.

On behalf of all the members, the club captain warmly congratulated David on his success and outstanding performance in winning the title and becoming Glamorgan County champion 2019.
